It is also a component in utility steels, e.g. V2A stainless steel and the stainless steel grades with the brand names Nirosta and Cromargan, which are used for cutlery. Nickel also plays an important role in most modern batteries such as the lithium-ion battery or the nickel-metal hydride batteries that have been known for years.<\/p>\n<h4>How could I come into contact with it?<\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21584\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21584\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21584 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/materialneutral.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Nickel-auf-Periodensystem_natros-adobestock-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Nickel auf Periodensystem der Elemente. Nickel is often found in jewellery, belt buckles or glasses frames because their shiny silver surface does not change on contact with the skin, e.g. it does not tarnish. Direct skin contact with these objects can trigger allergic skin reactions.<br>\nWorkers in the chemical industry may come into contact with nickel in reactors, boilers, fittings and pipes, depending on the intended use of the technical material in each case.<\/p>\n<h4>How dangerous is the material for humans and the environment?<\/h4>\n<p>Nickel is relatively harmless to humans and animals when it is bound in steel. Such steels are very stable and durable. They release very little soluble nickel in the form of nickel salts. These nickel salts are only <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_cc620b51ff25781d3b94409bfe1fb7a5\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>toxic<\/span> to humans in large quantities.<br>\nSmall amounts of nickel are essential for some types of bacteria. It fulfils an important service in their enzymes &#x2013; in contrast to humans, who do not seem to need nickel for the processes in their bodies, at least no evidence of this has been found to date.<\/p>\n<h4>Conclusion<\/h4>\n<p>We find nickel in many everyday objects. However, nickel can trigger an allergy.
