Due to their special properties, they are used in optical, electronic or catalytic applications, e.g. in photovoltaics for solar cells. Quantum dots are also being tested in the medical field, as the tiny particles can use their optical properties to make tumours in tissue visible, for example.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-24342\" src=\"https:\/\/materialneutral.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/LED-Fernseher_smuki-adobestock-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"&#xA9; smuki - stock.adobe.com\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/materialneutral.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/LED-Fernseher_smuki-adobestock-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/materialneutral.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/LED-Fernseher_smuki-adobestock-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/materialneutral.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/LED-Fernseher_smuki-adobestock-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/materialneutral.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/LED-Fernseher_smuki-adobestock-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/materialneutral.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/LED-Fernseher_smuki-adobestock.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\"\/>How could I get in touch with it?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At present, the consumer hardly comes into contact with quantum dots, as they are of the greatest importance for research. Their use in everyday products is limited to QLED TVs and displays from a few manufacturers. Because the quantum dots are inside the electronic device the consumer does not come into direct contact with quantum dots.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Is there any risk from this material to humans and the environment?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Since consumers do not come into contact with quantum dots, the following applies only to employees of research laboratories: When quantum dots are swallowed, the stomach acid often peels off the <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_f26c3746f347b6e4403f41641b3b8f3d\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>coating<\/span> of the particles so that the inner material is exposed. Quantum dots are only absorbed through the skin if it has already been damaged. There the particles can also cause <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_15f3295e0487b3d3caadfbdae8ed0777\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">inflammation<\/span>. After <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_f6fd8532a825e16b9830f66176590fb3\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">absorption<\/span> into the body, the quantum dots accumulate in the liver and spleen as is usual for comparable particulate materials. As they are relatively stable, they can remain in the organs for a long time. All studies on the uptake, distribution and passage through the blood-brain barrier were carried out with animals, mostly after <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_159fd610556698e89dd33c1db209fd4f\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">intravenous<\/span> administration, which is why they have only limited significance for a risk to humans in normal life.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Conclusion<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Quantum dots are of great scientific interest, but are currently only used sporadically in consumer-related products. Since they may also contain <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_cc620b51ff25781d3b94409bfe1fb7a5\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>toxic<\/span> elements such as cadmium, their use in humans will be limited in the future.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Quantum dots are a class of &#8220;nanocrystals&#8221; with a very small diameter of often only one or a few nanometres.
