Particular focus was on <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_66b0061badd68b0e6801ac52edb57e73\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">crystalline<\/span> nanocellulose (CNC) and its application in environmentally friendly packaging materials as important building block of a modern circular economy.<\/p>\n<p>The most important developments and findings within NanoCELL are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Development of a process for the lab-scale synthesis of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_5fcda5cdcfb7f0dcd50601d53faaa1ed\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">hydrophilic<\/span> CNC from different raw materials (a.o., cotton, birch, spruce) including successful CNC spray-drying; upscaling of the CNC synthesis process requires adaptations of the reactor design though.<\/li>\n<li>Successful surface functionalization of CNC (<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_bf274513649bb37f1e95ec610eda1dee\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">fluorescence<\/span> labelling, silanization).<\/li>\n<li>Successful <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_f26c3746f347b6e4403f41641b3b8f3d\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>coating<\/span> of different foil substrates (Polylactic acid, polypropylene, paper) with high composite adhesion and improved barrier effect against oxygen but need further studies necessary regarding coating reproducibility and barrier effect against mineral oils.<\/li>\n<li>Comprehensive physico-chemical characterization of CNC (size\/number distribution, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_b64fb14cce0fe0ef61f4c27adae9d8ae\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">Zeta potential<\/span>, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_a97b3032273e3adef4d8c731eae23fe4\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">agglomeration<\/span>) in complex matrices (a.o., cell culture medium, digestive juices) by multi-detector field-flow fractionation (FFF) and <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_a74c6713fadb34aeb69a3b129cc810cf\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">electron microscopy<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>Successful development of different <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_fdb8b55a8eca6aa21c3383e316dcdca4\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">in vitro<\/span> (GIT-model, 3D lung models) and <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_5d77a2776803c180bda98eb644d6de44\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>ex vivo<\/span> (porcine mucus, intestinal tissue) to study potentially <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_cc620b51ff25781d3b94409bfe1fb7a5\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>toxic<\/span> effects of CNC after oral and pulmonal <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_5bd815081aef5477a0b0a38216d0fcaa\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">exposure<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>CNC-transport studies in in vitro and ex vivo models under static and dynamic conditions show CNC-transport across the mucus layer, but not across the intestinal tissue;
