Revised SSbD framework released

In September 2025, the European Commission concluded its public consultation on the updated SSbD framework. As part of this consultation, it sought input from industry, academia, non-governmental organisations and experts in order to improve this voluntary decision-making support tool. The feedback received was directly incorporated into the final revision of the Commission’s recommendation, which has now been published.

The revised SSbD framework for chemicals and materials retains its core concept while introducing several new elements:

  • Principles of the SSbD framework
  • Scoping analysis
  • A new structure for the components of the safety and sustainability assessment
  • Assessment
  • Documentation
