Roadmap for the safe and sustainable development of innovative materials

The article presents a roadmap for the safe and sustainable development of innovative materials from 2024 to 2030. The aim is to integrate safety and sustainability aspects right from the design phase of new materials in order to facilitate market launch and reduce costs. The European ‘Safe and Sustainable by Design’ (SSbD) concept calls for ecological, social and economic aspects to be taken into account. Close cooperation between science, industry and regulatory authorities is emphasised in order to harmonise standards and test procedures. A comprehensive approach is intended to minimise risks and promote social acceptance of new materials.

The roadmap has now been published in the Computational and Structural Biotechnology Journal. DOI: 10.1016/j.csbj.2024.05.018
